St. Rita's Medical Center accomplished its 10,000th robotic procedure recently thanks to the technology from the intuitive surgical company. The robotic medical technology is called The DaVinci 4, which is the fourth generation of the product produced by the company. St. Ritas and Intuitive have been partnering since 2010, and in the 14 years of their collaboration, they have achieved over 10,000 successful operations. Surgeons must be educated and trained to use the DaVinci robots.

While robotics have made work easier in the surgery room, it is still the human element involved in surgery that has allowed St. Rita's to achieve such an incredible milestone.

"The DaVinci robot is probably one of the best surgical advancements in probably the last 20 to 30 years. It's made, at least from a urologist's perspective, very complicated pelvic surgeries much easier for not just the patient but the surgeon. I think one of the things we're celebrating today is the fact that we've become so proficient as an institution. Over 10 thousand cases over the last 10 to 15 years here, so not just urology, but OBGYN, general surgery, so this is really just a testament to everybody here," explained Dr. Omar Khan, a urologist at St. Rita's Medical Center.

Dr. Khan emphasizes that while the robotics involved in the surgery are helpful in aiding the surgery, it is still the surgeon's knowledge and autonomy that allow the robotics to be so effective during surgery, allowing for less blood loss, smaller incisions, and quicker recovery time. St. Rita's is also one of 234 hospitals in the country to use robotics in surgery.
