Move over or get pulled over

According to the FBI, over the last ten years 93 law enforcement officers across the U.S. were struck by vehicles and killed while working.

"Imagine you're sitting at your desk and a 75 thousand pound commercial motor vehicle drives by your desk five feet away. That would probably tend to put a little bit of scare in somebody, that's exactly what we go through.  We really urge everybody to know this law and to comply with it so that everybody can get home safely," says Lt.Tim Grigsby at the Van Wert Post.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is asking drivers to move over for emergency respond vehicles and roadside workers.

"Anytime they see a public safety vehicle, a tow truck a state trooper a cop, if they have flashing lights. they are to move to the adjacent lane away from that particular vehicle," says Lt. Grigsby.

Grigsby says most drivers don't understand that if they can't move over, they are to slow down . He says failure to do so, can result in a minor misdemeanor and possible jail time. "We are urging people to just comply with it. It's going to cost you just a few seconds to ensure that everybody on the side of the road is safe."

Officials says moving over will help protect those working on the roads.
