NEW BREMEN, Ohio (WLIO) — New Bremen welcomed St. Marys for a boys basketball matchup with recent history between the two programs. The Roughriders had won six straight meetings in the series dating back to the 2018–19 season before the Cardinals snapped that streak last year.
In the opening quarter, New Bremen set the tone early. Quarterback-turned-playmaker Gavin Dicke forced a Roughrider turnover and fired an outlet pass to Wyatt Weidner, who finished at the rim as the Cardinals jumped out to a 6–0 start.
St. Marys responded when Cayden Geiger knocked down a three-pointer to put the Roughriders on the scoreboard. New Bremen answered right back, as Dicke went full speed to the basket and finished through contact to extend the Cardinals’ lead to five.
Later in the quarter, St. Marys found a spark from Kasey Gross. Gross used a strong dribble move to pull up for the jumper and converted the and-one opportunity at the line.
Despite the Roughriders’ efforts, New Bremen began to separate as the game went on. McDonald’s Scholar Athlete of the Week Aaron Wuebker powered his way to the rim for a strong finish, helping the Cardinals pull away.
New Bremen cruised to a 56–29 victory, improving to 6–2 on the season.
