Officials ask Motorists to be Cautious during Back-to-School Season

School is back in full swing for Lima City, meaning buses and students will be hitting the road to get to class.

"You get use to driving all summer without seeing the buses and it's all about awareness and getting everybody use to seeing that again," AAA Sales Manager, Cindy Nelson, said.

As school zones and bus stops become more congested, authorities are urging motorists to be extra cautious in those areas.

"Just constantly having those hands on the wheels and those eyes on the road," Lima City Schools Superintendent, Jill Ackerman, said.

Whether students commute to school by bus or foot, officials say they can face many traffic hazards.

"We don't ever want anything to happen to any of our students," Ackerman said.

AAA has teamed up with Lima City Schools and local law enforcement to place friendly safety reminders in the area. Each year banners are hung on buses around town to remind motorists to slow down and pay attention in school zones.

"They've been use to all summer long not having to go 20 mph," School Safety Officer with LPD, Matt Douglass, said.

"That 10 mile difference for slowing down could mean the difference between life and death should a hold jump out in front of you," Nelson said.

AAA says you should eliminate any distractions while driving, make sure to not roll through stop signs in a school zone and plan ahead for heavier traffic. Lima City Schools superintendent also suggest bringing along some..

"Patience, attentiveness," Superintendent Ackerman said.
