Ohio senators hopeful for immigration agreement

The United States Senate rejected multiple bills involving immigration, but both Ohio senators believe something needs to be passed to help DACA.

The Senate blocked four different plans, including a bipartisan proposal that would have provided 1.8 million young immigrants a chance for citizenship and 25 billion dollars for a border wall. President Trump has set a March 3, 2018 deadline to get an immigration bill passed. Both Ohio senators Republican Rob Portman and Democrat Sherrod Brown says something needs to be done to protect the immigrants that have only known the United States as their home country.

“I am hopeful that we can provide some certain to DACA young people. I mean they came here as kids, some as toddlers with their parents, there is no fault of their own. They’re in school now, or their working, or in the military, and they just want to know that they are not going to be deported. And I think we can do that on a bipartisan basis," said Senator Portman.

"They know Lima, Ohio, they don’t know Lima, Peru, where they might have lived as a three year old. It’s important that we take care of these dreamers, who are doing what they hope they do. If they commit a crime deport them, but if they are good participants in our society, the kind of citizens that we would like to welcome, then we should fix this," commented Senator Brown.

It is unclear what the next step is following the defeat of the recent immigration bills.
