COLUMBUS, Ohio (WLIO) — Ohio's state parks have been named the best in the country.
The American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration, in partnership with the National Recreation and Park Association, awarded Ohio the 2025 National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management.
Ohio was recognized for innovation, accessibility, and conservation efforts across its 76 free-to-enter parks.
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) offers more than 9,000 campsites, 1,200 miles of trails, and over 7,000 educational programs each year.

Ohio was recognized for innovation, accessibility, and conservation efforts across its 76 free-to-enter parks.
"I think it just validates what we've been telling people — that our state parks, first of all, are free. Whether you tent camp, whether you want to go to a lodge, whether you want to go and hike for a day, it's there, and it's close to every single Ohioan," said Gov. Mike DeWine.
ODNR says the award reflects the hard work of its park staff, rangers, and volunteers.
