Portman gives update on situation at U.S.Mexico border

An Ohio Senator says immigration efforts on the U.S. and Mexico border has started to see results, but something else is finding its way to the United States.

During a committee hearing this week, Senator Rob Portman was able to question officials from Customs and Border Protection and Homeland security about the current situation along the southern border. They told him that Mexico has helped stem the flow of migrants from Central America significantly by putting more troops on their Northern and Southern border.

“What Mexico has done and what the Trump administration has done has started to work to reduce the flow,” says Portman. “It has gone down about 64% from May until September. But even though the number of people crossing is less, the amount of drugs coming across, by any indication is only increasing.”

Portman says more Crystal Meth and Heroin are making their way across the Mexican border. Plus, after having some success with stopping China from shipping Fentanyl through the mail to the U.S., drug dealers have found another pipeline through Mexico.

“This is a huge issue for us in Ohio, the Fentanyl, the Crystal Meth which is coming exclusively from Mexico, which is a powerful, cheap, terribly devastating drug,” adds Portman. “So we need to do more to reducing the supply, at a minimum stops some of the poison from coming in but it also increases the price on the street.”

Homeland Security Investigations has opened offices in Toledo and Dayton to help combat the influx of drugs from Mexico.
