OTTAWA, Ohio (WLIO) — Vietnam veterans were recognized for their service and received a heartfelt thank you from the Putnam County community during the 4th Annual Vietnam Veterans Day Celebration.
The Ottawa AMVETS Post conducted a ceremony at Well Grounded Café to honor the Vietnam veterans, complete with the playing of Taps to remember the fallen soldiers whose names appear on the Vietnam War Memorial, those who did not make it home. The holiday, which takes place on March 29, provides an opportunity for veterans to come together and receive the recognition they deserved when they returned home from the war.
“This is a very important day to me, to see fellow vets come together and talk about their experiences. This helps to give the vets the welcome home that they never got when they arrived back to the States. All gave some and some gave all,” says Donald Dorman, commander of Ottawa AMVETS Post 2013.
In addition to the ceremony, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office held a K-9 demonstration for the crowd, and all veterans were treated to free food and coffee as a thank you for their service.
