St. Marys School Board goes for second try for income tax

The St. Marys School Board will be going back to voters with another income tax, but it will be for less than the ballot issue that failed to get voter support in May.

During a special board meeting, the board was presented with two options for the November ballot. One a property tax, the other a one percent earned income tax, and the board voted unanimously to go for the income tax. Saint Marys is currently the only school district in Auglaize County that doesn’t have an income tax on the books. In May, voters said no to a one and half percent earned income tax, but the school district has found ways to eliminate some spending and expense to get the new proposed income tax down to 1 percent.

“As a district, right now, we are at over $800,000 in savings heading into the next fiscal year and looking at ways to get a little bit more saving in there, as well. Try and go over the $1 million mark with cuts and savings and reductions. Generate some different revenue before we start next school year,” said Bill Ruane, St. Marys School District Superintendent.

Ruane says they will be working on getting the word out to the public about the need for this income tax between now and the November 6th election.
