LIMA, OH (WLIO) - Learning about the costs of living opened the eyes of dozens of students as they found themselves with kids, debt, and possibly a low-paying job for some. It was the "Real Money. Real World." event presented by the Ohio State University Extension Office and Superior Credit Union, held at the University of Northwestern Ohio's Event Center.

This is the 18th year for the event held at the University of Northwestern Ohio's Event Center.

The Real Money. Real World. event brings seniors from all over the region to see if they can make it after graduation. Making a budget and sticking to it was harder than they thought. They also found a new appreciation of what their parents had done for them while they were growing up.

"I'm learning how to budget my money with two kids and being a dentist. So I'm just learning how, you know, responsibly budget my money," said Olivia Hall, a high school senior at Temple Christian. It's going pretty good. I have $6,000 left, so we're doing pretty good."

"With this, you are working to pay for, you know, kids; you're paying for food; you're paying for cars, clothes, and all that. So, t's a big eye opener, and I think that's the biggest thing—that it just is bringing attention to it," commented Jett Blackburn, a high school senior from Bluffton High School.

"We came here to learn how to budget. So basically we're just setting up as if we were in our future life with kids, budgeting our life. Buying houses and cars and just trying to make sure we can stay on the right path and keep our money going in a flow instead of running out," stated Kenyroa Strickland, a high school senior from Lima Senior High School.

Learning about the costs of living opened the eyes of dozens of students as they found themselves with kids, debt, and even a lower waged job for some.

"I think the main thing that I hear is that they don't realize how expensive a lot of the bills really are, and that's including child care. That seems to be the one that most of the time they don't realize that it costs as much as it does," said Chandler Clarkson, marketing and member experience coordinator at Superior Credit Union.
