The City of Lima has submitted paperwork to claim eminent domain over three properties planned to be used for a new Rhodes State College building in downtown Lima.
Lima is looking to acquire three lots in the city square, across from the city building, to make way for Rhodes State College's $20 million "Science and Technology Center". Two of the three properties are in limbo. According to the Mayor's Chief of Staff, one of the properties is owned by a now-defunct business and is set to be transferred to the city.
The other two properties include parcels that the city wants as well, owners and the city have not agreed on a purchase price. Hence the city's request to claim eminent domain over the properties.
The next step is for the judge to hear the case and decide whether it fits the qualifications for eminent domain. The city will then have to pay the amount the judge sees fit for the properties.
