ST. MARYS, Ohio (WLIO) — The St. Marys Roughriders continued their dominant start to the season, defeating the Elida Bulldogs 14-1 in five innings to remain undefeated.
Entering the matchup at 6-0, St. Marys wasted no time asserting control against Elida (3-2), building an early lead and never looking back.
In the bottom of the second inning, Aiden Meinerding lifted a fly ball to left field that was caught, but Kasey Gross tagged up from third and scored to extend the Roughriders’ lead to 5-1.
Later in the inning, Luke Rammel delivered a key hit down the right field line that stayed fair, allowing two more runners to cross the plate. The scoring surge pushed St. Marys ahead 7-1 and firmly in command.
Elida attempted to respond in the top of the third, but the Roughriders’ defense shut the door. Gross fielded a comebacker to the mound and fired to Rammel, who applied the tag to record the out and keep the Bulldogs off the scoreboard.
Gross also delivered a strong performance on the mound. The senior right-hander struck out four batters over five innings, allowing just one run and escaping a bases-loaded jam with a swinging strikeout.
St. Marys added to its lead in the bottom of the third when Rupert sent a ground ball through the infield, bringing Gross home to score.
The Roughriders continued to pile on runs, eventually securing the 14-1 victory via the run rule in five innings.
With the win, St. Marys improves to 7-0 on the season, maintaining its position as one of the top high school baseball teams in the area.
