Rick McCoy from Van Wert County spoke to the members of the West Central Ohio Safety Council about staying safe during severe weather. He touched on threats like thunderstorms, hail, and straight-line winds. There have been 55 confirmed tornadoes so far this year in Ohio, which usually sees the most tornado activity in May and June. So, McCoy told the group to be prepared when severe weather strikes.

"We know that we have a lot of severe weather across this part of the United States, and particularly here in Northwest Ohio. Keep yourself safe, keep your family safe. If you are at work, keep everybody safe and know what to do. Know how to get those warnings; we have a lot of technology today to do that, and that always saves lives," says Rick McCoy, Van Wert County EMA and Homeland Security director.

McCoy says it's important for businesses to develop a plan for when a tornado warning is issued to keep their employees and their customers safe.
