Some of the most difficult damages to deal with can be the ones caused by Mother Nature.
With recent hail and flash flood outbreaks, many are turning to insurance companies for answers. Hail coverage comes in two forms: ground related damages, and those above ground, generally referring to the roof of a house or building. While ground related hail damages, to cars for example, are relatively easy to take care of, damages to the roof of a house tend to be a little more difficult if action isn't taken promptly.
Tim Stolly, an agent and the co-owner of Stolly Insurance, says, “Get a contractor up there right away. It’s good to know now, so you can take some action on it now.” Staying in contact with your insurance agent could even save you a few dollars, especially if you've made some upgrades the insurance company isn't aware of. Stolly adds, “If you have gotten a roof in the last four or five years call your agent because there’s a chance your homeowners insurance could be getting surcharged.”
The next common misconception comes with differentiating flood insurance and water back-up coverage. While flood insurance covers damages to the foundation that came from the outside through windowsills or doors, water back-up coverage protects you from the inside. Stolly says, “You want to make sure you have the conversation with your agent, ‘do I have water backup coverage?’”.
Staying in contact with your insurance agent as well as taking quick action to report damages are the keys to saving yourself money when in comes to weather related damages.
