YMCA swimmers are getting in the zone for a big swim meet this weekend (3/16/18).
The Lima YMCA swim team is celebrating their 50th year of being Barracudas, and to mark the occasion they are crushing their season this year. Multiple swimmers qualified for the Great Lakes Zone Championship Meet in Geneva, Ohio — the YMCA equivalent to school state competitions. The group will compete against around 1,200 swimmers from 85 different YMCA's from around the region, a new challenge that they are very excited for.
"It's nice seeing new pools that you normally don't see and new competition that you're not around," says Kayana Cook, 17, who will be competing over the holiday weekend. Cook will be competing in the 50 and 100-meter breaststroke race.
"When I go to these big meets, I get to meet state champions from different states," said Charlie Spyker, 16. "I get to meet big swimmers from Michigan, from Kentucky, all over the place."
Spyker will toss his cap into the lane for the 50 and 100-meter backstroke as well as the 50-meter freestyle races.
In all, 20 Barracudas qualified for the meet, but only 14 will be making the trip to Geneva to compete.
