DEFIANCE, Ohio (WLIO) — Defiance Bulldogs battled back but couldn’t overcome an early deficit against Amherst Steele Comets at the PBR Classic.
The Bulldogs didn’t record their first hit until the fifth inning, when Brayden Weaver delivered a single to left field, setting up runners on the corners.
Moments later, Mason Noirot came through with a base hit to center, bringing home Jase Brownlee to put Defiance on the board and cut the deficit to 6-1.
The Bulldogs kept applying pressure in the inning. On a double steal, Noirot advanced safely to second while Spencer Sheppard slid home to trim the lead to four.
Defiance continued to chip away as Jaren Honsberger ripped a shot to center field that got past the defender, allowing Noirot to score and make it a 6-3 ballgame.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Bulldogs were still fighting despite trailing 10-3. Daniel Orta put the ball in play, and a throwing error at first base allowed two runs to score, cutting the deficit to five.
Defiance would add two more runs in the frame, but the comeback fell short as Amherst Steele held on for a 10-7 victory.
