With just a week to go before Election Day, early voting numbers are hitting record numbers in parts of the nation. Nearly 1.7 million Ohioans have voted early. Around 941,000 of those are in person. 1.1 million Ohioans have requested absentee ballots, and nearly two-thirds have been returned. That return rate for absentee ballots tends to be higher in our area. Hardin and Logan counties top that list at 73%, followed closely by Mercer and Van Wert counties at 72%. One local county stands out though; only 41% of the 10,000 Allen County voters who requested an absentee ballot have returned those.
Around 32% of absentee ballots that have been requested statewide have been returned to their board of elections as of Monday afternoon.

August 28, 2024, Press Release from the Office of Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose: (Columbus) – As Ohio voters begin receiving official absentee ballot application forms in the mail this week, Secretary of State Frank LaRose is reminding Ohioans to be vigilant when completing any absentee ballot application form that isn’t labeled as official election mail. Since 2012, Ohio has mailed absentee ballot application forms to registered voters in every even-year general election. Only after the completed application is verified by bipartisan teams at a county board of elections is a ballot mailed to a voter. In all, nearly 8 million registered Ohio voters will receive the absentee ballot application. Ohioans who choose to vote by absentee ballot must return their completed application form to their county board of elections to receive the absentee ballot for the November 5 general election. In the absentee ballot request instructions, Secretary LaRose recommends voters submit their request as quickly as possible to ensure the U.S. Postal Service has adequate time to process their absentee ballot request.

House Bill 458 has been signed into law, making it a requirement that Ohioans show state-issued identification when they go to vote. Types of IDs include an Ohio driver's license, state ID card, U.S. passport, or military card. Previously you may have been able to vote if you show your utility bill or other city paperwork, but the recent passage of the bill has eliminated that option altogether.
