The Department of Housing and Neighborhoods is putting collections barrels out for their Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. This is the second year they have supported three local non-profits. This year's recipients are Crime Victim Services, Heart and Sole, and All Starr Pets.

They always say that a picture is worth a thousand words, but this afternoon cute holiday pictures can help one organization with a specific mission. A Lotta Love Pet Rescue invited some four-legged friends and their owners out to get some holiday pictures taken.   The furry models had their choice between a fall or winter backdrop or even get their picture taken with Santa.   Besides the pictures, there were auction items that people could bid on and all the money raised goes to help spay and neuter cats.  They have partnered with Humane Ohio out of Toledo, to provide a clinic 35 community cats spayed and neutered each month.

The Van Wert Humane Society welcomed the public Saturday to check out their new facilities and the dogs and cats ready for adoption. 

Around three years ago, the planning phase began to construct a new building for the humane society because they have outgrown their previous location, which was the county dog pound.

The city ordinance states that you must be 18 years of age to have a pit bull and you can only have one dog per residence. When outdoors, the animal must be muzzled and leashed if being walked and in a secure pen if outdoors on your property. You must carry 100 thousand dollars of liability insurance in case the dog attacks a person or domesticated animal. These are a few of the regulations to legally own a pit bull in the City of Lima and local law enforcement says they need to be followed to protect others.

These cats are just waiting to find that forever home where they will be loved and cared for. There are curious cats, shy cats, adventurous cats, and cats that just sit back and take it all in. Each cage has a card for that furry friend that tells their disposition and when they were brought to the shelter. As a no-kill shelter, they are at capacity with cats and need to get them adopted.

About a dozen students from West Middle School were at the Allen County Human Society as part of their “Spartan Give” project. The kids helped groom the animals and even did a little laundry, folding dozens of the hundreds of blankets used in the kennels for the animals. Those participating enjoyed spending time helping.

The library held their second Woof and Meow adoption event. Deb’s Dogs and the Allen County Humane Society brought in dogs and cats of all ages for people to pet and check out and maybe make a part of their home. Library employees started the adoption event to bring together their passions of books and animals, that passion could even extend to the kids who are lucky to have a pet at home that they could read to.
