The Lima Chapter of the NAACP has created a list of key issues they will be focusing on in 2023 and beyond. The organization identified six game changers that they will be focusing on improving in the next two years, some include improving heath for minorities and criminal reform. Along with that, they want to see increased economic sustainability for individuals of color to help offset the rise of violent crime in the Lima area.
The Lima chapter welcomed NAACP Ohio State Conference President and former state senator Tom Roberts to discuss the importance of voting. Roberts talked about how a single vote can send an important message to those who are running, and in the end, the people's voice can make a difference both at the state level and nationwide.
Crime Survivors for Safety and Justice has chapters in larger cities in the state of Ohio and are now looking to smaller communities to promote the needs of individuals who have been a victim of crime. The Crime Survivors for Safety and Justice was instrumental in the passage of Ohio Senate Bill 36 which allows more victims to qualify for compensation and addresses the trauma of crime.
The Lima chapter believes that the new law, which allows qualifying adults to carry a firearm without the same requirements as a CCW permit, is too loose. With the amount of gun violence that the city has seen in the last year, the NAACP says that they believe this new law could create new concerns in Lima and that people of color could be treated unfairly.
The Central District aims to bring workspaces, flats, creative studios, makerspace, shops, a dog park, and more to the downtown area. On Wednesday, leaders for the district hosted the NAACP Lima Chapter in order to showcase the types of opportunities coming to the area.
