The Lima Fire Department is seeing several firefighters move up the ranks as the department undergoes numerous changes following retirements and departures over the past year.
City of Lima human resource officials say that taking a test may be an issue for some individuals and is holding them back from applying for employment. The city requires people to take a civil service test as part of the application process. Some people freeze or get anxious when it comes to testing. The city is holding workshops to help ease the pain.
The City of Lima’s Human Resources Department and the Civil Service Board are teaming up to help get people to fill some needed positions. They will be holding two workshops on July 26th at the Lima Public Library to focus on what it takes to get a civil service position in the city. During the workshop, they will be talking about open positions in the city. Plus, they will also discuss test taking and how to prepare for the test which officials believe is a barrier for people applying for city jobs.
Major Ron Holman explains, “When they first get hired and depending on whether they have been through the academy or not we put them through a very strict background check, a polygraph, a physical. They take a psychological exam. And when they start, they go through a period of in house training and then they’ll do an 18-week on each shift 6 weeks with a field training officer.”
Head Park Ranger Randy Kohli says, “We’re working at all the 14 parks. We’re working at the 5 reservoirs. We’re working very hard within the community to make this a proud community. We like to see things clean. We like to see people out enjoying and making it a recreational area for all.”
The Lima Civil Service board held an emergency meeting Tuesday afternoon. Voting on a newly adopted rule that will change duties of the President, at least for right now.
