At Monday's event, Second Lady Vance and First Lady DeWine spoke about the importance of early literacy. Second Lady Vance created the Second Lady Summer Reading Challenge, available to every child in kindergarten through 8th grade to join. The challenge encourages children to continue learning throughout the summertime by reading 12 books of their choice.
This morning, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, First Lady Fran DeWine, and Lt. Governor Jim Tressel joined Ohio State Fair Executive Director Adam Heffron to cut the ribbon at the new, state-of-the-art entry gate, officially opening the 170th Ohio State Fair.
First lady Fran DeWine had a goal of getting books into the hands of kids in all 88 counties in the state. So, she has been working hard to promote getting kids birth to 5 years old signed up for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, which mails out free books to the kids each month. This year, Ohio has 362,000 books hitting mailboxes each month, which is the most of any state that is using the Imagination Library program.

Fran DeWine read to kids at Wapakoneta Elementary School a book titled "Coat of Many Colors" that tells a story about Dolly Parton and her coat that was made for her when she was in school. The First Lady Spoke on the importance of Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, and how it has helped prepare kids to start their academic careers.
The DeWines came to the Lima Public Library as part of First Lady Fran DeWine's reading initiative. For the past three years, she has been working on getting more kids signed up for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. Right now, 45% of kids from birth to five years old receive free books every month in Ohio.
Ohio's first lady has also been diagnosed with COVID-19. Last week, Governor Mike DeWine announced that he had a mild symptom of COVID-19, now Fran DeWine has come down with the virus. Both are in quarantine at home and have similar symptoms. Last week it was announced that the governor had headaches, body aches, runny nose, and sore throat. Mrs. DeWine also got an antibody treatment, like the governor. Both are fully vaccinated and have their booster shots.
