The Lake Improvement Association will host its 24th annual Bar Stool Open at the bars on Grand Lake St. Marys on Saturday, Aug. 9, 2025.
Celina Moose Lodge recently donated $10,000 to be used for the construction of a new shelter house adjacent to the ADA fishing dock and a new playground on the west bank of Grand Lake – which the Moose previously donated $5,000 toward.
July 2, 2024, Press Release from the Lake Improvement Association: (GRAND LAKE ST. MARYS) - The Indian Lake region suffered significant tornado damage this spring. As a gesture of goodwill to our lake neighbors, Lake Improvement Association past president Keith Westrick reached out to see if there was anything the Grand Lake LIA could do to help, and they indicated they needed help replacing trees that were destroyed at Moundwood and Fox Island.
A new project aims to improve the overall quality of Grand Lake in Saint Mary's. A wetland Conservation Area along Bruntwood-Langenkamp is currently in the works. The project will begin construction in late summer 2021.
The Lake Improvement Association held a meeting on Saturday to go over the variety of projects completed this year. The association shared details on project such as the north woods lighthouse, which is approaching 100 years old.
The 2020 Bar Stool Open mini golf tournament and the Kids Fishing Derby have both been cancelled due to concerns over the recent spikes in COVID-19 cases around the state. In their news release, the Lake Improvement Association executive board states they recognize the benefits of both events to the lake and community, but they couldn’t guarantee participant safety during the pandemic.
While the blue-green algae dying off at Grand Lake St Marys means fewer toxins in the water, it also means less oxygen in the water. Grand Lake has experienced a deadly combination of factors, including the dying algae, that has led to a widespread fish die-off from lack of oxygen in the lake.
Over the past couple of months the lake improvement association has been busy working on some of it's newest projects including an installation of stake beds and wetlands at windy point.
Both projects began just last month. On October 5 20 stake beds were installed across 10 different areas of Grand Lake St. Marys. The new stakes were installed to help keep the fish in on area and sheltered from predators.
The Lake Improvement Association (LIA) brought the Barstool Open back to the shores of Grand Lake St. Marys for another year. Teams of four went around by land and boat to twelve different lakeside bars for a round of mini-golf. Last year, the event was able to bring 190 groups, a mark they are expecting to hit again this year. Those high numbers are good for the businesses they bring foot traffic to and for the lake itself, as it will give the lake improvement association more money to put back into projects that improve lake health.
The annual Lake Improvement Association (LIA) Summer Kickoff brought the community to the shores of Grand Lake St. Marys this weekend. The event got things up and running with the World’s Funnest 5-K Fun Run, which takes people around the different public areas they can use on the east coast of the lake.
