October 2, 2024, Press Release from the United States Navy: WASHINGTON (Oct. 2, 2024)- Lima, Ohio native Steven Van Dyne advanced to the rank of chief petty officer in the United States Navy Thursday, Sept. 26, during a promotion ceremony at the Washington Navy Yard. As one of just seven musicians in the United States Navy Band selected for advancement to the E-7 pay grade, Van Dyne joins an elite list of Sailors to wear the anchor collar devices that symbolize his new rank and authority. Van Dyne joined the Navy in 2016 after a successful audition as an audio engineer for the U.S. Navy Concert Band, and the completion of basic training. He is a graduate of Ohio University's Honors Tutorial College, having focused on classical music production. In 2023, Van Dyne was hand selected to fill a critical manning vacancy in the Navy’s Pacific Fleet Band and served aboard USS Pearl Harbor (LSD 52) as part of Pacific Partnership, the Navy’s largest annual humanitarian and disaster relief-preparedness mission in the Indo-Pacific. During the four-month deployment Van Dyne served as the leading petty officer, leading a 19-member multinational team covering 44 performances in the Philippines, Malaysia, Palau, Fiji and Tonga. While stationed aboard the ship, Van Dyne assumed other duties outside his primary audio engineer assignment, including serving as a maritime operational control watch officer.

Members of the Lima Symphony Orchestra spent their day with LCC students to share their experiences as orchestral musicians and soloists. Students had the opportunity to ask the musicians questions and watch them perform as they learned about the realities and career opportunities inside the music industry.

Their candlelight concerts will kick off the new year and will be held in two historic venues. This year, concertgoers will be treated to "Harp by Candlelight". The Lima Symphony is comprised of dozens of world-class musicians sharing their talents in Northwest Ohio. These concerts will showcase a fewer number of musicians with soloists performing some of classical music's best composures in the candle-filled venues.

Before the ball drops on New Year’s Eve, the Lima Symphony Orchestra will be getting the party started with their annual pops concert.  This year they will be joined on stage with Jeans n’ Classics for "Never Break the Chain, The Music of Fleetwood Mac."  The concert will feature such hits as “Little Lies,”  “Dreams,” and “Don't Stop.”  While the crowd will have a great time singing along, the symphony musicians are enjoying playing some of the iconic music that they grew up with.

Area musicians and actors will be performing in a Hollywood & Broadway themed concert titled, “A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC”, A Concert Featuring Sights & Sounds from Stage & Screen, which will be held at The First United Methodist Church of Van Wert on Saturday evening, November 12th from 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM.

Their final program of the year was at the historic Brumback Library in Van Wert Tuesday morning. The Symphony Storytime takes a group of musicians around to libraries in Allen County and the surrounding area to combine the love of reading and music into a program focused on a specific topic. In the final program of the year, the students were learning about opposites.

Students follow a daily schedule of classes and participate in ensembles for their chosen musical focus. The summer music camp is taught by professional musicians and music educators, including ONU music department faculty and alumni. The students are looking to take what they learned this week back to their home school music programs.
