“We’re hearing from residents about needing more curbs, more street paving, as well as lighting,” Smith said. “That’s an ongoing discussion we’re having in the city about how we can use our existing resources to be able to deliver those necessities to our neighborhoods.”
“It’s a great opportunity to talk about streets, sidewalks, curbs,” Coleman said. “There’s been a lot of talk about trash, so we’ve been looking at that too—actually bringing along trash bags with us now to pick up litter during the walks. We’re really getting involved.”
“You can bring tires, brush, junk furniture, but do not bring any hazardous waste or chemicals,” said Angie Rex, a property maintenance code inspector. “Paint can be accepted if it has been dried out or treated with kitty litter. If it’s still in liquid form, we won’t take it.”

Through the program, Mayor Smith spends time walking through different city wards, having one-on-one conversations with residents and city officials. The goal is to get an in-depth look at the concerns and priorities that matter most to residents.
The 2024 season of Mayor Sharetta Smith's "Walking the Wards" kicked off Tuesday night on Lima's west end. On Tuesday evening, Mayor Smith along with Fire Chief Andy Heffner, Lima City Council President Jamie Dixon, and several other city officials walked the city's Fourth Ward neighborhoods. The mayor and her team stopped and talked with several Fourth Ward residents about what issues they are observing and what they would like to see happen. After the walk, Mayor Smith talked with Your Hometown Stations about what concerns neighbors addressed.
