January 3, 2025, press release from the the Alzheimer’s Association: TOLEDO, OH, Jan. 3, 2025—During Financial Wellness Month this January, the Alzheimer’s Association is encouraging individuals and families to make financial plans that will create some security in preparing for an unexpected crisis of caring for someone with Alzheimer’s or other dementia. One in nine Americans aged 65 and older are living with Alzheimer’s disease – that’s nearly 7 million Americans across the country and 236,200 in Ohio. Dementia not only takes a tremendous physical toll on diagnosed individuals, but the costs associated with the disease can be overwhelming and put a huge economical strain on families. Disease-related costs can jeopardize a family’s financial security, and many families and caregivers make enormous personal and financial sacrifices.

July 2, 2024, Press Release from the Office of Ohio Governor Mike DeWine: (COLUMBUS, Ohio)—Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced today that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has approved a proposal by the Ohio Department of Medicaid (ODM) that will incentivize nursing homes to make more private rooms available for residents. The plan is part of the Governor’s comprehensive strategy to maximize the quality of care and quality of life experienced by nursing home residents across Ohio.

The VFW Post 9142 was making stops at different nursing homes to drop off presents, one of the stops being the Meadows of Ottawa Senior Living Center. Each veteran received a hat and a lap blanket to use. The veterans appreciated that the VFW stopped by to honor their service and think about them around the holidays.

Members of the Forest Park United Methodist Church, here in Lima, are collecting blankets for veterans. Hundreds of veterans are in nursing homes and the Dayton VA Hospital has several on their campus. Blankets are something these vets can use to stay warm not only in their rooms but also when they are transported back and forth for medical appointments. A small token like a blanket can mean the world to the veteran.

USPS Retail Associate Stacy Jorgensen received the Postmaster General Hero award for helping an elderly man who had fallen victim to a scam. A regular customer she knew very well purchased two large money orders to send internationally and she knew this was unusual. “I took care of him while I worked at a nursing home and I know he does not have family oversees,” Jorgensen recalled.
