Hundreds of families gathered today for Lima City Schools’ annual back-to-school celebration and supply giveaway.
The Lima Noon Optimist Safety City, a fixture in the community for almost 50 years, has seen a surge in student participation this year. Officer Eric Mericle of the Lima Police Department said their field trip program has been attracting students from surrounding counties, hitting a milestone of 1,400 student visitors since March.
First through fourth-grade students from Shawnee Elmwood and Maplewood Schools will attend the off-site classes once a week to learn more about religion and the bible. Kindergarten students are expected to start attending in January. The new classrooms have been set up through a collaboration between Shawnee Alliance Church and LifeWise academy, and educators are excited to get the school year underway.
Katte says that they need to find a balance between work and their life outside of school. The last school year was tough for a lot of districts, including Lima City Schools, and Katte says that they need to lean into the tough stuff and maximize every moment at school and at home, and know they are in the business of changing lives.

Lifewise Academy is getting ready to spread the word of the Lord to more students across the state and country this coming school year. They are holding a two-day summit in Van Wert for their bible focused instructors before the next school year starts. Lifewise is a religious instruction program, that happens during the school day but off of school property.
The Rotary Club sponsors the Interact Club which promotes their motto of Service above Self. Some of the volunteerism that the students participate in include helping at the West Ohio Food Bank; with the Night to Shine, a prom for people with disabilities; the Special Needs Christmas Party; and recently put on a mock crash for the Bath Students before prom.
