April 2, 2024 Press Release from the City of Lima: The Spay and Neuter Assistance Program (SNAP) is designed to assist Lima residents with voluntary sterilization of companion animals as a proactive approach to controlling pet overpopulation. This assistance program will give first priority to low-income residents, but all residents in need of assistance will be considered.

The club making donations to three area pet rescues. The money was raised from the club's virtual pet contest held during their 5K back in October. Deb's Dogs, A Lotta Love Pet Rescue, and the Ohio SPCA Humane Society of Allen County all receive donations to help them continue their mission to help the neglected, abandoned, and injured animals in the area.

A total of 8 counties have had confirmed cases of chronic wasting disease, six, including Allen County, were added since the deer hunting season started. Deer harvested in Allen County are not required to get tested, but the Ohio Department of Wildlife is asking hunters to voluntarily get their deer tested to track the spread of the disease.

The Division of Wildlife established earlier hunting seasons within the disease surveillance area to slow the spread of CWD by reducing deer numbers before the breeding season. Archery hunting season begins Saturday, Sept. 9, and an early gun hunting season is open Saturday, Oct. 7 to Monday, Oct. 9. CWD sampling is required for all deer harvested within the disease surveillance area Oct. 7-9, Nov. 4-5, Nov. 11-12, as well as during the entire seven-day gun season (Nov. 27-Dec. 3). Staffed sampling locations will be available during the seven-day gun season.

According to the Village of Ottoville, the Putnam County Health Department was notified that a sample taken on July 21st came back positive for West Nile. This is the first positive sample in Putnam County. The virus was already found in mosquitoes in Hancock County.
