MARIA STEIN, Ohio (WLIO) – The Marion Local Flyers were pushed to the brink Friday night but managed to survive a major scare from Versailles, extending their winning streak to 70 games with a dramatic 20-19 victory at Booster Stadium.
Versailles struck first and entered the third quarter with a 13-7 lead. Quarterback Ethan Wilker added a 1-yard sneak to put the Tigers up 19-7, sending shockwaves through the stadium as an upset seemed within reach.
But Marion Local responded quickly. Andrew Schmakers broke free on a big run to set up Ben Meier’s rushing score, cutting the deficit to 19-14.
With less than four minutes to play, the Flyers faced 4th-and-5 from the 9-yard line. Quarterback Brennen Hess delivered in the clutch, finding Brayden Mescher in the corner of the end zone for the go-ahead touchdown. Marion Local held on as Derek Knapke intercepted Wilker in the final minute to seal the win.
The Flyers remain unbeaten at 6-0 and extend their incredible winning streak to 70 games, while Versailles falls to 4-2 despite a valiant effort.
