UNDATED (AP) — Texas Tech's appeal to the NCAA to reinstate Brendan Sorsby's eligibility has been denied. That decision is separate from the transfer quarterback's lawsuit against the NCAA. A person with knowledge of the decision told The Associated Press on Friday night that the NCAA denied Texas Tech's petition for a second time. Sorsby was ruled ineligible after admitting to wagering on sports, including his own team while at Indiana. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because there was no announcement about the appeal decision from either the NCAA or the quarterback’s current school. The NCAA and Sorsby are awaiting a ruling from a Texas judge after the QB filed a lawsuit May 18. A hearing was held Monday, but no decision has been made yet.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The NCAA Division I Cabinet put off a vote on the age-based eligibility model it is considering and instead made minor adjustments to the proposal. The Cabinet removed language about starting an athlete’s eligibility clock after their high school graduation. The proposal now says the clock will start upon initial full-time enrollment in college or at the beginning of the academic year following their 19th birthday, whichever occurs first. The adjustment would apply to all sports and comes after recommendations from stakeholders in men’s ice hockey, men’s basketball and the service academies.
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Gavin McKenna left his family and friends behind in Whitehorse, Yukon, some six years ago to pursue his NHL dream. Now, the NHL is traveling to one of Canada’s most remote regions to meet with McKenna — projected to be the No. 1 pick in the draft later this month. The Toronto Maple Leafs hold the top selection with newly hired general manager John Chayka making the trip to the Klondike to meet with the 18-year-old and his family. McKenna was in Buffalo, New York, this week for the NHL's pre-draft combine. And he'll be back in Buffalo in three weeks, where the draft is being held June 26-27.
UNDATED (AP) — The NCAA is on the cusp of extending Division I athlete eligibility from four years of competition to five and essentially setting an age limit. It should be remembered that the issue of who can play and for how long has been a point of contention in college sports from the beginning. Walter Camp is known as the ‘Father of Football’ and was in his seventh season playing for Yale when an injury ended his career in 1882. Amos Alonzo Stagg was 27 when he played his fifth season in 1889. The latest rule change would combat aging rosters.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Former Alabama football coach Nick Saban has testified in support of a bipartisan bill to overhaul college athletics. Saban told the Senate Commerce Committee Wednesday that it's time to “tap the brakes” on a system where players can increasingly earn millions of dollars while moving between freely between schools. The leaders committee held the hearing as they push legislation that they hope can break the congressional gridlock over how to regulate college athletics. But the SEC and the Big Ten oppose the bill and said it “leaves critical issues unresolved.” GOP Sen. Bernie Moreno also said he had “grave concerns” about the legislation.
UNDATED (AP) — BYU star freshman AJ Dybantsa headlines The Associated Press' initial 2026 NBA mock draft. The first-team AP All-American has long been a favorite to go No. 1, a pick held by the Washington Wizards. He's joined in the top tier of one-and-done prospects by Kansas guard Darryn Peterson, Duke forward Cameron Boozer and North Carolina forward Caleb Wilson. Next comes a group of freshman guards including Illinois' Keaton Wagler, Arizona's Brayden Burries, Arkansas' Darius Acuff Jr. and Houston's Kingston Flemings. Michigan is poised to have three Wolverines go in the first round after winning its first NCAA title since 1989. The draft's first round is set for June 23.
