ST. MARYS, Ohio (WLIO) — Celina snapped a three-game losing streak to open the season with a 62-54 victory over St. Marys on Friday night in a Western Buckeye League rivalry matchup.
The Bulldogs set the tone early behind junior Gavin Wicker, who scored five straight points in the first quarter.
Wicker highlighted the opening period with a spinning drive to the basket that resulted in an and-one opportunity, followed by a steal and coast-to-coast layup to give Celina an early edge.
St. Marys kept the game close with strong perimeter shooting and second-chance points.
Senior Blake Dingledine connected from beyond the arc to pull the Roughriders within two, and Clayton Rhodes followed with a putback off an offensive rebound to keep St. Marys within striking distance.
Celina answered with timely rebounding of its own, including a strong offensive putback by Austin Grieshop, and maintained control down the stretch to secure its first win of the season.
