Government faces a potential shutdown unless a deal is made by this Friday

LIMA, OH (WLIO) - The U.S. government is looking at a potential shutdown this Friday unless lawmakers reach a deal to continue funding.

New House Speaker Mike Johnson has a two-part plan to prevent a partial government shutdown, by extending funding for certain agencies until January 19th like veterans programs, transportation, and agriculture, and continuing others until February 2nd like the military and Homeland Security. The plan has drawn criticism from both sides of the aisle. With Veterans Day last week, Ohio Congressman Bob Latta says something needs to be done, especially protecting the pay of military men and women.

"When you think of the two battle groups over the in Mediterranean and the Red Sea, that all the sudden you are saying to these men and women, 'Oh thanks for you service but we are not going to pay ya.' So, this is why it's important to get these appropriations bills done," says Rep. Latta.

One thing Johnson's plan does not address is money for Israel, Ukraine, or the U.S. southern border, like President Biden wants.
