ALLEN COUNTY, OH (WLIO) - While they are still controversial, health officials say they are important in keeping keep your child healthy.

With kids heading back into the classroom, many schools require that students are immunized for certain diseases. Now is the time to get your children vaccinated. Allen County Public Health offers appointments to get them and they strongly suggest talking with your doctor if you aren't sure about them because they do protect against disease.

"Polio is an example of one of those diseases. It can cause paralysis in children and is serious but we have not seen that disease in 40 to 50 years so people are not as inclined to get that vaccine. We want to strongly encourage people to get those vaccines because all these diseases that the vaccines are out there do have an impact on individuals," explained Brandon Fischer, Allen County Health Commissioner.

The health department is hosting a special teen immunization clinic Wednesday, August 31st from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. It is for kids entering grades 7 through 12 only. You can call 419-228-4457 to make an appointment.
