LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — While the county fair is a place of fun and excitement for many, the lights, sounds, and crowds can be overwhelming for some. That’s why the Allen County Fair is introducing its first-ever “Sensory Day” — a new effort to create a more inclusive experience for individuals with disabilities and their families.
The fair administration has partnered with the Allen County Board of Developmental Disabilities to offer sensory-friendly activities on August 21st during specific hours. Select rides on the midway will operate without lights and music, and several games will also be available in a more sensory-conscious environment.

This initiative builds on recent improvements to the fairgrounds, including adult changing tables and automatic door openers — all part of an ongoing effort to make the fair more accessible to all.
“The ride company that we work with actually does this at other fairgrounds on the state level as well, so they've kind of done this before, and that's what makes us feel comfortable about rolling it out for this year's fair,” said Troy Elwer, Promotions & Operations Manager for the Allen County Fair.
Sensory Day begins at 11 a.m. in the Gospel Tent on Thursday, August 21st, with a resource fair. Several agencies will be on hand to provide information about services available for individuals with disabilities. Details about the sensory activities will also be available at the event. Standard gate admission is required to participate in Sensory Day events.
