LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — A long-awaited transportation center for veterans is now open and operating in downtown Lima, providing a safer and more convenient space for those traveling to medical appointments.
The new facility, located on East North Street, serves as the home base for the Allen County Veterans Service Commission vans that transport veterans to U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs-directed appointments. Previously, veterans met drivers in parking lots, often exposed to the elements.
Allen County commissioners purchased the property to improve access and comfort for veterans using the service.
“They can meet here get in out of the weather before they were just meeting in a parking lot. So this is where you can get your vans in and out of the weather. Now the veterans themselves have a place to go during inclement weather,” said County Commissioner Brian Winegardner.
Officials say the new center enhances both safety and efficiency while ensuring veterans have a reliable location to begin their trips.
A grand opening ceremony for the transportation center is scheduled for Wednesday, May 6.
