LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — The Allen County Dog Warden Facility has been recognized as the top dog warden facility in Ohio for 2025, honored for its commitment to improving care and services for canines. The award was presented by the Ohio Dog Warden Association during its December conference.

With 88 dog warden facilities operating across the state, Allen County stood out for its exceptional work in animal welfare and shelter operations. Under the leadership of Dog Warden Julie Shellhamer, the department has made extensive upgrades to its facility—without using tax dollars. All improvements were funded through the Dog and Kennel Fund, which is supported by dog license fees.

Recent upgrades include resurfaced kennel areas, new HVAC and air filtration systems, and the addition of outdoor runs. Shellhamer said even more improvements are in progress.

“Just about done. We've got siding and insulation to put on the building yet, and we've got a new roof to put on our outside kennels, which was another thing that we got accomplished. We got nice exercise areas now outside for the dogs. So it was just a multitude of things, and I very much appreciate it, and I'm glad that I was recognized for the accomplishments that my staff and I have been able to make this past year. So it's been great,” Shellhamer said.

Shellhamer also earned statewide recognition last year as Ohio’s 2024 Dog Warden of the Year.
