September 24, 2025, Press Release from Allen Soil and Water Conservation District:
LIMA, Ohio — As fall approaches and leaves begin to drop, the Allen Soil and Water Conservation District is reminding residents to properly dispose of their leaves to protect local rivers and streams.
While some leaves naturally fall into waterways, adding piles of leaves, grass clippings, or yard waste directly to rivers or storm drains can be harmful. When large amounts of leaves break down in water, they release excess nutrients and reduce oxygen levels. These conditions make it difficult for fish and other aquatic life to thrive. Leaves from our lawns can also carry lawn chemicals and pet waste, adding further pollution to our waterways.
Residents in the City of Lima can take advantage of the city’s leaf pickup program. Those living in townships should contact their local township office to learn about their available disposal options. Home composting is another environmentally friendly solution for managing leaves.
“Proper leaf disposal is a simple step everyone can take to protect clean water in Allen County,” Lydia Archambo, Stormwater Coordinator.
