LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — Heritage Elementary School hosted a unique family literacy event Thursday night, inviting students and their families to “Camp Read-a-Lot.”
The event gave children and parents the opportunity to climb into teepees and read together by flashlight, creating a fun and engaging atmosphere centered around books. After reading, families could make s’mores, bookmarks and hand puppets, and play games together. School officials say the goal of the event is to highlight the importance of families reading together and to encourage lifelong literacy habits.
“Reading to your students is very important. It can help them want to read in the future, and it can help them be successful in all areas of life in the future. We want to let our community know that they are welcome in our building, and we want to promote reading so that we can improve our student performance,” says Bethany Zambori, assistant principal at Heritage Elementary School.
This is the first year the school has hosted Camp Read-a-Lot, and organizers hope to make it a regular event in the future.
