Lima, OH (WLIO) - The summer heat can be overwhelming at times, but Wednesday was a perfect opportunity to grab your paddle and get on the water.
The Johnny Appleseed Metro Park District offered kayaking lessons for beginners at the Ottawa Metro Park on Lima Lake. The lessons included learning the safety rules of kayaking, picking up different strokes and paddle techniques, and completing a full lap around the lake while enjoying the sunshine and occasional breeze.

The beginner's class is part of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Boating Safety Education Grant from the state and provides a fun and hands-on way to teach beginners the ropes of being on the water.
"We're learning all of the basic steps. So we're going to learn how to do a forward stroke and a reverse stroke and a sweep, which is how you turn, and then also learning all of the different safety measures. So knowing what the different whistle blows mean, knowing how to properly fit a life jacket so that you're really safe on the water, and different techniques for kayaking safely," commented Marie Walton, a naturalist for the Johnny Appleseed Metro Park District.
If you're interested in learning how to kayak, the Metro Park District will hold another beginner's class on Saturday, July 12, at the Ottawa Metro Park, starting at 10 a.m. You can click here to take you to their website to register.
