LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — He’s big, he’s bold, and he’s officially been introduced to Lima and Allen County.

Standing nearly 25 feet tall, a towering wooden cow named "Moorice" now greets visitors at the main entrance of the Allen County Fairgrounds off State Route 309. The massive sculpture, crafted by Bear Hollow Wood Carvers, was unveiled to the public this week as dozens gathered for its opening.

Complete with a giant name tag and an oversized cowbell — donated by the Lima Building and Construction Trades — the sculpture is designed to be interactive, offering visitors a unique selfie opportunity and a memorable fairgrounds experience.

“This is something pretty cool,” said Troy Elwer, promotions and operations manager for the Allen County Fair. “We actually have lighting up here to where you can even see him really well in the evenings. But yes, he is fully open for business. So I encourage any of you to come up and interact with him, get your photos, get your videos, and get your chance at a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

The project aims to turn "Moorice" into a landmark attraction for the region. Cameras installed nearby will help track visitor traffic, including out-of-state guests, adding to the excitement around the sculpture.

“It’s just a lot of fun to experience,” said Betsy Billingsley, executive director of Visit Greater Lima. “You kind of come over the hill and there’s a giant cow waiting on you.”

Long-term goals include getting “Moorice” recognized on Google Maps as a point of interest, potentially bringing more tourism and attention to the Lima and Allen County area.

The idea of making Moorice the fair’s mascot was originally inspired by the late Allen County Commissioner Jay Begg during his time as fair manager.

Now, with “Moorice” proudly standing tall, community leaders hope the colossal cow will become a beloved symbol of the fairgrounds — and a must-see stop for locals and visitors alike
