LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) – The federal government is considering a tax credit for people who are caring for loved ones at home.

According to AARP, more than one million Ohioans care for a family member at home, with average out-of-pocket expenses reaching approximately $7,000.
Ohio Congressman Mike Carey has co-sponsored the “Credit for Caring Act,” which would provide working family caregivers with a tax credit of up to $5,000. According to AARP, more than one million Ohioans care for a family member at home, with average out-of-pocket expenses reaching approximately $7,000. The bill has bipartisan support and aims to offer some financial relief to family caregivers.
“Rosalynn Carter used to say that you're going to reach three phases in life. You're either a caregiver, somebody who is being caregiving, or somebody that knows somebody that's going to be caregiver. So, this is something that affects people from all across the realm of life,” said Rep. Mike Carey, (R-Ohio), 5th Congressional District.
Carey, with other Republican and Democratic lawmakers, reintroduced the bill during the current session after it failed to pass the U.S. House in its initial attempt in 2024.
