LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) - Natural gas heats many homes, businesses and water, but it is something many people may not think about on a regular basis.
Enbridge Gas Ohio spoke to the West Central Ohio Safety Council about natural gas and carbon monoxide safety during its monthly meeting.
Officials say if you smell gas in your home or business, you should report it immediately to the fire department and the gas company.
To prevent safety issues, officials suggest having natural gas appliances and equipment checked regularly to make sure they are working properly.

“Every year you should have your furnace, your water heater, and your appliances checked to make sure that the you have proper flames, uh you have enough uh combustion air for the equipment, and also that it's venting correctly, that there's no blockage in your vents,” says Denny Culp, Enbridge Gas Ohio.
Culp says another important safety tip is to call 811 before digging to prevent hitting any natural gas lines that could be buried on your property.
