Underground gas station tank leak causes gas odor at Mercy Health - St. Rita’s

LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) - The Ohio EPA says an underground tank leak at a nearby gas station caused the gas odor issue at Mercy Health St. Rita’s, forcing an evacuation.

A spokesperson with the EPA says the odor traveled through the storm sewer, which was traced back to tanks at the Gold Star Gas Station.

The tanks have been emptied, so responders have stopped flushing the storm sewer.

The Bureau of Underground Storage Tank Regulations is on scene and conducting an investigation and determining remediation actions.

The Ohio EPA staff will remain on scene to oversee the response efforts.

The Lima Fire Department continues to monitor the air for vapors.
