OTTAWA, Ohio (WLIO) — AARP Ohio is helping Ottawa seniors and elementary students be a little more safe.
The organization awarded GoOttawa nearly $10,000 to put in a crosswalk on Putnam Parkway. The crosswalk will help residents at the Meadows of Ottawa and elementary school students cross the street safely to get to the Putnam County Library. The crosswalk will be solar-powered and will have a mural painted on it that celebrates Ottawa.
“This was a need that we pointed out when we had received a community grant from AARP two years ago. So, this has been something that we've been building towards. So then when we applied for this new grant and got it to say we were excited is is an understatement.” said Jacqueline Langhals, GoOttawa executive director.
“This is the pride and joy that we have in the state office. The idea of connecting AARP Ohio with local communities and at the end of the day improving the lives in the communities that we work with,” said Ty Pine, AARP Ohio outreach and advocacy.
The project is expected to be completed by December. In the 10 years that AARP Ohio has given out Challenge Grants, the organization has awarded more than $1 million for community projects.
