LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) - Campers are also getting a closer look at the ground beneath their feet.

The Johnny Appleseed Park District is hosting "Rock On," a geology camp for kids ages 7 to 9. They're learning about rocks, fossils, and minerals in a hands-on way.

“‘Rock On’ camp is a way for kids to get introduced to geology,” said Lindsey Gallaugher, a naturalist for the Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District. “A lot of times out in nature, we're focused on all the living things, but it's really neat to understand the rocks beneath their feet and how they shape the plants and animals in our local landscape.”

“We’re talking about lots of rocks, so I can talk to my grandpa about them because he loves rocks,” said Cooper Garver, a fourth grader at Bath Elementary. “I was like, ‘I want to do rock camp.’ Now I am taking rock camp so I can teach my grandpa.”

“Getting to know how rocks are non-living and they actually have different materials in them — that was really interesting for me because I never knew that,” said Ana Ludlam, a fourth grader at Elida Elementary.

The park district has more summer fun ahead, including kayaking and beginner archery classes, which are still open for sign-ups.
