Growing STEM: Learning about medical imaging on the job at Delphos Urgent Care

DELPHOS, Ohio (WLIO) - Delphos Urgent Care through Mercy Health provides several medical services for residents right in their own backyards - that includes imaging services that can be performed by technicians like urgent care imaging supervisor Caryn Wenning.

"First, I am a mammo, x-ray, and CT tech, and then I supervise all the imaging at the three urgent cares," said Wenning. "I take care of patients, doing the mammograms, CAT scans and X rays. We have the same technology as down in Lima at St Rita's hospital."

At Delphos Urgent Care, some of those machines include a mammography unit and a CT scanner.

Wenning says that a those interested in the world of imaging would have to get a two year radiologic technology degree from a college and would start as an x-ray tech. She adds that imaging techs can then move on from x-rays by training on the job and learning more about the different modalities in that area of medicine.

Wenning adds that imaging techs can then move on from x-rays by training on the job and learning more about the different modalities in that area of medicine.

"I'm currently training one of my techs to do mammography; I learned on the job years ago in mammography and then in CT, and I've never regretted it," said Wenning. "Just learn as many modalities as you can so you're useful, so you can just step up and do whatever the need is, you can get it done. I loved science and math and all the way through school, and my guidance counselor in high school recommended x-ray. I looked at the science, I love the science of it, and thought, 'yeah, I can do this'."
