LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — A lot of kids showed off their skills in downtown Lima on Saturday as they stepped into the ring for the fifth annual Safe Summer Block Party.
Soldiers of Honor hosted the annual event, which included boxing exhibitions, food and giveaways to promote a positive, safe and active summer. The organization offers a faith-based Boxing Boot Camp program that teaches discipline, self-control, and physical and mental well-being through boxing techniques and training.

“Boxing is a sport that teaches discipline, it teaches mindset, focus, all those great things. So, we incorporate that with faith, and we teach them you are powerful and strong in the Lord. They come down here two days a week, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5 to 6 p.m. and we fight it out,” says Veronica McLaurine, Soldiers of Honor.
About 40 kids are participating in the program. Those involved with Soldiers of Honor say they’ve seen growth in the participants’ minds, bodies and spirits.
“So, I just love to see those little ones come and box their little hearts out and then grow up and get to be really, really good,” says Mary Early, board member, Soldiers of Honor.
“For these kids that come out here and be coached and mentored by coach Aaron, it says a lot about the kids that even want to come out here and push themselves to be better in the community, grow into a young adult and just become a successful, productive and confident person in the future,” says Erick Benge, program coordinator, Soldiers of Honor.
Soldiers of Honor’s Summer Boot Camp begins June 24th. Those interested in enrolling their children can visit https://www.newlookfitnesslima.com/.
