LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — If you've been putting off filing your taxes, the deadline is here — and the tax man is knocking.

Tax preparers across the region are working overtime to get last-minute returns prepared, filed, and submitted before the federal deadline. For those who have waited until now, professionals are offering guidance to avoid costly mistakes.

“If you want to file an extension, you can file Form 4868,” said Cheryl Lawson, CPA at Lawson Tax & Accounting. “You can go to irs.gov to do that online, or you can print out a hard copy. Just keep in mind that filing an extension is only an extension of time to file, not time to pay.”

Lawson stressed that if you owe money, penalties and interest will still apply even with an extension. Federal taxes must be paid on time to avoid additional charges.

For individuals who are unable to pay their full tax bill, the IRS does offer payment plans, but those arrangements must be made by the end of the day on Tuesday.
