Lima hosts 2nd annual Fourth of July Round-Net Tournament

LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) - Faurot Park was the destination for the second-annual Fourth of July Round-Net Tournament.

Players from as far as Cincinnati traveled to Lima to test their skills in round-net, sometimes referred to as spike-ball, a sport increasing quickly in popularity. Round-net is a fast-paced, team sport played with a small, circular net placed at ankle level, where two teams of two players each take turns hitting a ball off the net in a volleyball-style rally.

The objective is to spike the ball in a way that the opposing team cannot return it within three touches. The sport has even made its way to the collegiate and professional levels. For tournament director and Shawnee graduate Jackson Carpenter, the success of last year's tournament made it an easy decision to bring back for the holiday weekend.

"It's just nice having people out and from the community on Fourth of July, especially," said Carpenter. "Lima doesn't have a competitive round-net scene like cities like Columbus or even Cincinnati in Ohio. Lima just doesn't really have that, so it's nice to even just one day of the year get people out playing."

There were intermediate and advanced divisions for the tournament with the winner of each division taking home cash prizes and gift cards.
