CLEVELAND, Ohio (WLIO) — The Lima Refinery paid $19 million in penalties in 2025 to the federal government for violations to the Clean Air Act.
The United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio says the monetary penalties stem from a lawsuit settlement filed against the refinery in 2024. The refinery is owned by Canada-based Cenovus Energy.
According to the lawsuit, the Lima facility violated emission regulations involving the chemical Benzene and other hazardous air pollutants.
As part of the settlement, the company is also required to make $150 million in capital improvements to reduce emissions at the refinery.
U.S. Attorneys in Ohio collected around $134 million in civil and criminal actions in 2025.
