LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — The Lima Rotary Club was all abuzz Tuesday as members learned about the benefits of locally produced honey and the role of honeybees in agriculture.
Ty Shelby, a member of the Greater Grand Lake Beekeepers Association and owner of The Mustached Honey Bee, spoke to Rotarians about beekeeping and the potential health benefits of pure, raw honey. Shelby has been tending bee hives for nine years and encouraged residents to support honeybees, which are responsible for pollinating more than 400 plants, including about 80% of U.S. crops.
Shelby said honey is distinctive to the region where bees gather nectar and pollen, which can contribute to certain health benefits.
“If you're buying local honey, you're getting unadulterated, pure honey that has all of the natural pollens in it, the natural enzymes. They're going to help with gut health. They're going to help with allergy relief. The pollens that you're allergic to, those pollens, are in the honey, so you actually build up a natural immunity to the pollens.”
Shelby emphasized that he is not a doctor but suggested that those who suffer from seasonal allergies consider taking a teaspoon of local raw honey each day before allergy season begins in hopes of easing symptoms.
In addition to discussing honey’s potential benefits, Shelby highlighted the critical role bees play in sustaining crops and supporting local food systems.
